Timmothy’s ADEN Success Story
Timmothy Custer’s path to independence and professional fulfillment showcases the power of persistence, a strong support network and the right resources. After experiencing a traumatic brain injury that impacted his short-term memory, Tim faced unique challenges in employment. However, his determination to succeed led him to a transformative journey with the Ticket to Work program, the American Dream Employment Network (ADEN), and SteptoWork LLC.
Tim began his professional journey with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) and Work Skills Corporation in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he worked as a custodial trainee at the University of Michigan. When this opportunity ended, Tim transitioned through several jobs, including positions at Wendy’s, a lumber company, and FedEx. These roles came with their own hurdles, such as feeling overworked and overwhelmed. Recognizing he needed additional support, MRS referred Tim to SteptoWork LLC, an ADEN Member, where he began working with Patricia Reonas, the owner of SteptoWork and a Certified Work Incentive Practitioner, in February 2021.
Patricia helped him develop practical strategies to overcome his memory challenges, including using his smartphone to document tasks and assignments. She also served as an advocate, working with Tim’s supervisors to ensure his strengths were recognized and accommodations were made. Tim credits Patricia with “saving [his] career” by providing the guidance and advocacy he needed to succeed.
With Patricia’s support, Tim secured a permanent custodial position at the University of Michigan in July 2021. He has since achieved significant milestones, such as moving into his own apartment, purchasing a car, and achieving financial independence. Tim’s determination, coupled with the resources provided by ADEN and SteptoWork, has been instrumental in his success.
Tim’s current goals include applying for an apprenticeship position at the University and ultimately becoming an Equipment Maintenance Manager—a position he hopes to retire from. His story is a testament to the impact of the Ticket to Work program. “If you struggle with communication, having support is invaluable,” Tim shares. The program not only helped him secure meaningful employment but also allowed him to maintain access to vital health benefits through his transition off of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
If you are between the ages of 18-64 and receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the Ticket to Work program could be the key to achieving your employment and financial goals.
