On May 12, the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program began to accept applications from individuals with disabilities and others in low-income households for assistance of up to $50 a month to help cover the cost of internet access. There is a limited amount of funds available and you need to apply immediately before the funds are completely allocated.
The EBB was created by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help low-income individuals and families stay connected to the internet during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is also a stipend available toward qualifying, connected devices such as a laptops, tablets or computers. The stipend up to $100 must be purchased through your internet provider, which is expected to discount the internet services and/or the cost of the device you are purchasing. The monthly, discounted internet service will be available until EBB funds ($3.2 billion) are used up, or up to six months after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
How do you apply?
Applications can be submitted through the GetEmergencyBroadband site or by mail to Emergency Broadband Support Center P.O. Box 7081 London, Kentucky 40742.
How do you know if you are eligible?
You are eligible if one person in your home meets any of the following requirements:
- Loss of income from job loss since February 29, 2020, and income is less than $99,000 annually, or
- Receive food assistance through SNAP (food stamps), or
- Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, or
- Receive Medicaid or
- Receive Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit.
How do you know if your internet provider is participating in the EBB?
There are more than 300 internet providers approved to participate in the EBB program including AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. The FCC website lists which providers are participating in your state. They do not offer a connected-device discount. EBB program participants human-I-T and PCs for People, do offer help in getting connected devices
