Sean’s ADEN Success Story
Sean’s life took a dramatic turn in 2016 when he fell from a 53-foot roof, resulting in a coma and extensive rehabilitation. Determined to rebuild his life, Sean began working with his state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency, which introduced him to a training program for becoming a Sterile Processing Associate. This was the first step on his path to a rewarding career in the medical field. Sean assigned his Ticket to the American Dream Employment Network (ADEN) to support his transition back to work in June 2020. Through Career Assist and Consulting LLC, a service provider and ADEN Member, Sean received comprehensive services that included benefits planning and career advancement.
In July 2019, Sean was hired by a Level 1 Trauma Center, the same hospital where he had been treated after his accident. “I like the sense of giving back to the same system that gave me back my life. It gives me a sense of satisfaction and purpose,” Sean shares, reflecting on his journey.
Sarah House, the owner of Career Assist and Consulting LLC and a Certified Work Incentive Practitioner (CWIC), played a crucial role in helping Sean navigate the complexities of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits. “Sarah has been instrumental, especially with Medicare and Medicaid stuff. I wouldn’t be able to do that successfully alone,” says Sean.
Sean’s dedication and resilience shone brightly through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He continued to work tirelessly in the hospital, valuing his role and team, whom he calls the “unsung heroes of the hospital.” His mother, Susan, expressed pride in Sean’s achievements and noted the positive impact of the Ticket to Work program: “We are impressed with the whole Ticket to Work program. As parents, we steered Sean towards something more career oriented. He was trying to get on his feet again.”
Despite facing short-term memory loss, Sean found that the repetitive nature of his job helped him cope. He has become a leader and mentor to new students, sharing his knowledge and making complex tasks easier to understand. “Students love learning through Sean because he went through the same training and can break down the information in a way they understand,” Sarah shares.
Sean is approaching his five-year anniversary at work, a milestone reflecting his personal growth and professional achievements. He continues to pursue professional development, working towards a Tech II certification with the support of his supervisor. His journey is not just about personal success, but also about inspiring others. “Sean went through the whole pandemic working in a medical system. He showed up, continued going to work and his sense of pride in giving back really showed,” Sarah adds.
Today, Sean is financially self-sufficient and is building a secure future, all thanks to the Ticket to Work program. He contributes to a retirement plan, is eligible for a pension and is increasing his Social Security Retirement Insurance Benefits. Sean’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of perseverance, support networks and the transformative opportunities provided by the Ticket to Work program.
