Biography
Sindy Marisol Benavides is a proud Honduran-American immigrant who has experienced the American dream, and now is committed to harnessing the power of her beloved community, ensuring that countless young people, women and immigrants have the same opportunity as she did. As the Founding Executive Director of Aquí: The Accountability Movement, Sindy is dedicated to amplifying the positive narrative of Latinos across the nation, advocating for accountability in the fight against hate and discrimination, and creating systemic change that opens opportunities to the largest ethnic community in the U.S.
Before joining Aquí, Sindy served as the President and CEO of Latino Victory where she broke historical records by increasing the number of Latinos running for office at local, state, and federal levels. Under her leadership, Latino Victory also achieved its most successful fundraising year, both for its 501(c)(3) foundation and its federal PAC.
Sindy has a long history of leadership and service in the Latino community. She was the Chief Executive Officer for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country. In this role, she was the first woman, immigrant, and millennial to serve in its ninety-year history. Ms. Benavides previously served as the Chief Operating Officer and National Director for Civic Engagement and Community Mobilization for LULAC. She also held key roles at Voto Latino and was Northern Virginia Political Director for the 2012 Kaine for Virginia Senate campaign. Additionally, she was National Director of Community Outreach for the Democratic National Committee and served as Latino Liaison and Director of Gubernatorial Appointments for Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine.
Sindy is a founder, co-founder, or founding board member of several impactful organizations, including LULAC Council 4611, the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN), the Virginia Coalition of Immigrant Rights (VACIR), and the Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Action (HOLA). She is also a board member of the National Disability Institute and a proud NHLI Hermana and HOPE Binational Fellow.
Sindy graduated as valedictorian from Virginia State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Spanish. She also attended American University for graduate studies in International Affairs. She lives in Northern Virginia with her beloved family and their four-legged pup, Valor.
